Ma’Rose the Midfield Maestro

Phumzile Prudence Mokgomane was born and bred in
Vosloorus 23 years ago; she studied at Zimele
Primary School and Erasmus Monareng
Secondary school, both in
Vosloorus. She grew up playing street soccer with the boys and that is where
she developed her passion for the sport.

She played for Blue Birds FC (men’s team) where she
was called Zidane, Kathorus Ladies team, Moroka Swallows Ladies (where they
call her Ma’Rose – which is Rose of Vosloorus) and has even previously featured
in the national women’s squad, Banyana Banyana.

Ma’Rose, the midfield maestro does not have any
sponsorship or product endorsement at the moment, and she would really love to
have that opportunity to help her further her career overseas where she would
like to play.

She would also use that as an opportunity help and
work with young people who are willing to play football nurture their talent,
by taking them of the street and away from substance abuse like alcohol and
drugs.

"Children growing up in
the townships have few facilities that stimulate their interest in sports.
Opportunities are severely limited for both playing and learning sports. This
is an undesirable situation because parents are desperate to keep their kids
off the streets and away from drug usage", explain Phumzile.

"Children that grow up
participating in sports have an opportunity to learn the importance of working
as a team, anger management (managing their anger) and prioritising a healthy
lifestyle", continues Phumzile.

From the sponsors,
Phumzile would require soccer boots, track suites for training, soccer balls
for her own practice and a first aid kit. "I have always had a passion for the
sport, hence I also want to help with the development."

Phumzile trains twice a
day, in the morning with the boys from her neighbourhood and also in the
afternoon with Moraka Swallows.

Her other interest
include being a passionate rugby supporter. Phumzile’s message to the young
girls who would like to pursue their dream in sport, is that they should
continue working hard, especially if they participating in the male-dominated fields.
