Maties Crowned Inaugural Women’s Varsity Cup Champions

Maties were crowned inaugural Women’s Varsity Cup champions, after they defeated UJ in the final at UWC Sports Stadium in Bellville on Thursday, 13 April 2023.

The Maroon Machines dominated the match from start to finish to walk away with a 63-9 victory over the ladies in orange.

Ropah Madyah scored Maties first try in the 5th minute of the game with Elme Kruger adding the extras two points from the conversion. Not long after, Danelle van Zyl scored the second try for the ladies in maroon, which was converted by Kruger.

Janke Oosthuizen scored the third try for the maroon machines in the 11th minute, with Kruger converting to make it 3 out of 3. The 4th try was scored before the break by Elitha Sylvester who went over in the left corner, unfortunately Kruger missed the conversion.

In the 33rd minute, Maties captain Bianca Augustyn outpaced the UJ defense to score a sensational try that was converted by Kruger. Van Zyl went on to score her second that was also converted by Kruger making the score 44-0 in the 36th minute of the game.

By the half-time mark, Maties led 53-0.

The Orange Army finally got a breakthrough in the 61th minute with a try by Precious Maduchem, which was converted by Shiham Chtioui.

Amber Meiring of Maties went on to add the nail in the coffin, adding another point to the scoreboard, but Kruger failed to convert from a difficult angle.

Meiring went on to score yet another try to take the final score to 63-9.

The FNB Player That Rocks Award went to Maties Ropah Madyah who had a brilliant game.
