Maties Notch Up 92 Against VUT in Varsity Netball Opener

Maties were in sublime form as they beat VUT 92-27 in their first match of the season at the Madibaz Indoor Centre in Port Elizabeth on Sunday evening.

The opening of the Varsity Netball season kicked off with Maties taking on VUT, with the history of results being as high as 89 for the good, for Maties. It was a game that Maties were expected to win.

The game started off in the first quarter bright and evenly with both sides slotting home those points, but as the first quarter kicked on, Maties started to make those important interceptions and took control of the game, ending the first quarter off 18-6 to the good. The second quarter was much of the same, although VUT scored more points, halfway through the game it ended at 34-13 to Maties.

It was a real up and down game for VUT, gaining possession and losing it when it mattered. Forcing them back into defending over and over again.

And the third quarter was nothing but the same. The Maties side pushed VUT back into their own half, scoring point after point, lifting that shots to goals conversion rate. The side from the Vaal didn’t show enough fight. There were moments of fight but it was never enough to give any real competition to the fast paced Maties side.

The side from Stellenbosch were creating the two-on-one scenarios, dominating the attacking plays. At the end of the third quarter, the powerplay was still not necessary because of the free scoring of Maties and VUT protecting themselves against all the double points. The third quarter ended with Maties already collecting their bonus point for scoring more than 50 points. With the score ending on 56-19 to Maties.

The tempo never died down for Maties, completing long and short passes to out dazzle VUT. The strikers for Maties pushing the defence of VUT out of their comfort zones, to easily work their way into the final circle and score uncontested at their will.

VUT were the first to make use of their powerplay, where each goal counts for two points. But as for the rest of the game, it was one-way traffic and Maties took full advantage of the VUT powerplay. Maties let the time run out for their powerplay, letting it play out in the last two minutes. Charmaine Baard, linking up with a strong Nichole Taljaard, was very clinical in the circle, scoring a majority of Maties’ points very confidently and easily.

The game ended in such a blitz because of the powerplay that Maties beat their own record against VUT, to score 92 points.

The FNB Player of the Match was the Maties goalkeeper, dominating the defence and attack, turning the interceptions into attack.

It was just the start Maties needed to kick off their campaign and to give them the confidence going into the season.
