In what could be a first-ever for women’s cricket (maybe in the world?), newly-appointed SA Women’s Cricket captain Mignon du Preez (Minx) knocked 203 off 126 balls, with her fellow national team-mate Dane van Niekerk scored 203 off 157 balls – both not out – when Northerns women played Limpopo women at Sinovich Park (Sinoville Cricket Club Pretoria) on Sunday, 28 January, 2012.

The remarkable 50-over total of 449/1 set by Northerns against Limpopo set up a convincing win for the Pretoria-based team. Photo: Jacques de PreezIn the same match that saw Northerns score 449 in their 50 overs, new 16-year old leg-spin sensation Sune Luus took 5 wickets. Limpopo ladies never got started, and good bowling saw them all back in the change room for less than 40 runs.

This event will strengthen the sentiment from the five “stronger” sides in SA (Northerns, Western Province, Boland, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng) to compete against each other rather to play against the “upcoming” sides.

This match was played in a very hot Sinoville – Sinovich Park is renowned to be one of the biggest outfields in SA (larger than Supersport Park). Not many fours were hit as the slow outfield stopped at least 40 balls just short of the boundary that resulted in 3 or 4 runs taken between the wickets.
