Former Momentum Proteas captain Mignon du Preez, who is a household name when it comes to local and international cricket, has been elected ambassador of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers which will take place in Abu Dhabi from 18-25 September 2022.

Du Preez, who retired from One Day International cricket will take on the vital role of mentor and commentator for the qualification tournament for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup which will be hosted in February next year.

Speaking on her selection, du Preez says: “It’s such a privilege to be named the Ambassador of the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier in Abu Dhabi. I will be working closely with all the teams in a mentor capacity, as well as doing some commentary. I’m really looking forward to the conversations and the opportunity for knowledge-sharing during the competition.”

The 33-year-old has put in the hard yards in all three formats of cricket, scoring 1805 runs in 114 T20Is, seven half centuries and 3760 runs in 154 ODIs with two centuries and 18 half centuries. Her story and her remarkable career is one that will continue to inspire generations of cricketers.

“I’ve already had an opportunity to share my cricket story and inspire the players via a quick Q&A session earlier today (Saturday). I also got to work with the USA Team at their training session this evening. We had valuable discussions on 1) showing intent when batting, 2) how to increase scoring shot percentages and 3) how to utilise your crease. We also had a quick conversation on playing and fielding under lights, as playing at night is fairly new to most of them.”

du Preez is still available to play in the T20I format for her country and has captained South Africa in 46 ODIs and 50 T20s, including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2014.
