The top eight women chess players in South Africa are currently fighting for a place
in the S A Women’s Chess Team that is scheduled to play in the Chess Olympiad
in Dresden, Germany in November 2008.
The ages of the players participating in the
South African Women’s Closed Chess Championship at the Oakdale Club, Belville, Cape Town, varies from 13
years to 30 years. This is to show that age has got nothing to do with playing
ability. The youngest grand master in the world is only 13 years old.
The winner of this tournament will win the
fantastic floating trophy donated by Aleta Michaletos as well as the official
title: 2008 SA Women’s Closed Chess Champion.
This momentous occasion which got underway on 7 January, stands
out as one of the great sporting chess events in South Africa.
There is stiff competition with the likes of
Melissa Greeff, Carmen de Jager, Monique Sischy. and Jenine Ellapen in action.
