Multi-sport enthusiasts, fitness junkies and lovers of the outdoors will have a great opportunity to test their endurance levels early in the New Year, by taking on the action-packed Totalsports Challenge, presented by New Balance and Powerade.

The 7-stage event will start in Gordon’s Bay and finish in picturesque coastal town of Kleinmond on Saturday, 12 January 2008, where entrants will have to show their mettle during seven taxing disciplines, including a 12km surf ski, 1.5km swim, 50km road bike, 13km road run, 13km K1 canoe, 25km mountain bike and finally a 9km beach run.

Participants can compete individually or in teams of two, three or seven. The introduction of the Totalsports "Terra Firma" Challenge presented by New Balance and Powerade was well received in October 2007 at the Totalsports Challenge Sun City and will make its debut in Kleinmond in January 2008.

The Terra Firma Challenge is ideal for those athletes wanting to stay clear of the water and will consist of only four of the seven stages of the Totalsports Challenge, excluding the swim, surfski and K1 canoeing legs.

According to Race Director Dezroy Poole, the event is truly unique in format and spirit. "The Totalsports Challenge has been a tremendous success over the past few years both in the Cape and at Sun City.

"It is with great pleasure that we return to Gordon’s Bay/Kleinmond in January 2008 as the route is phenomenal and truly adds to the splendour of the Totalsports Challenge. In October 2007, we went one step further with the introduction of the Terra Firma Challenge, which was received extremely well by participating athletes.

"The unique format of both races will definitely appeal not only to the ultra endurance athletes, but also to the top athletes in specific disciplines as well as young developing talent," said Poole.

The starting time for the Totalsports Challenge is 06h00, while the Terra Firma Challenge will start at 07h30. Both events will start in Gordon’s Bay.

Early entry fees (before 31 Dec 07) for the Totalsports Challenge are R900 per 7-member team, R600 per 3-member team, R500 per 2-member team and R300 for individual entrants, while early entry fees for the Terra Firma Challenge are R1 000 per 4-member team, R500 per 2-member team and R300 for individual entrants.

With over R125 000 in prize money up for grabs, the Totalsports Challenge promises to be an exciting test of stamina and expertise with loads of action for spectators.
