Natalie du Toit, one of the most celebrated Paralympic athletes in history, will swim the final race of her career when she participates in the 100m freestyle S9 at the London Games on Friday.
Du Toit, fresh off her third gold medal at the 2012 Paralympic Games on Thursday night, this time in the 200m Individual Medley SM9, told the media she was sad, relieved and a little bit scared ahead of her final race, but would give it everything.
“To walk away with a medal will be very special with it being the last competition.”
She lauded the South African fans in the aquatic centre, as well as the home crowd, who shouted their support as she went on to win the 200m IM in a time of 2:34.22 to secure her 13th career Paralympic gold medal.
Du Toit acknowledged the stiff competition from fellow swimmers but said she just swam the 200m as fast as she possibly could.
On Tuesday evening, du Toit won gold in the 400m freestyle final (S9), storming home in a time of 4:30.18.
She opened up her London Paralympic Games account on Thursday, 30 August when she bagged gold in the women’s 100m butterfly (S9) in a time of 1:09.30.
