Nigeria Beat New Zealand for First U17 Football World Cup Win

Nigeria displayed a completely different performance over New Zealand on Friday at the Fatorda Stadium, to record their first U17 Women’s World Cup win in Margao, Goa.

The girls entered the game following a 2-1 loss to Germany in their first game, while New Zealand lost 3-1 to Chile.

Nigeria’s first goal was scored by Amino Bello after she met a cross from Tunmininu Adeshina’s with a powerful header in the 17th minute of play.

Miracle Usani sent in a seemingly harmless cross into New Zealand’s goal area but a miscommunication between Feinberg-Danieli and Manaia Elliot meant the defender deflected the ball beyond the expected grasp of the keeper.

Usani was credited with a goal and Nigeria leaded 2-0 into the second half. In the 75th minute Taiwo Afolabi scored the 3rd goal to extend Nigeria’s lead.

The icing on the cake was placed by the 15-year-old Edidiong Etim in the stoppage time with another long-range strike that stunned Feinberg-Danieli to make the final score 4-0.

Nigeria will be hoping to maintain the form when they play Chile in their final group game on Monday, while New Zealand will look at getting a win against Germany.

Only the top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-final.
