Northern Blues defeated Western Province 2-0 to win the 2022 SA Hockey Women’s IPT title on Saturday, 03 September.
Blues were looking to regain the title they previously won in Bloemfontein in 2019.
It was a game that was highlighted by the quality of the goalkeepers as Nepo Serage (WP) and Anelle van Deventer both produced moments of true class in denying the opponents and leaving a game poised for a moment of quality.
For 45 minutes, no goals were converted from both sides and after three quarters the score remained goalless, although they were the better team and statistically leading the encounter, the Northern Blues had failed to differentiate on the key and most important metric goals.
But it was Xanthe van Zyl who changed everything for the Blues. She created a pocket of space, emerged into the circle and fired in a powerful, unstoppable reverse stick strike to break the backs of Province.
Despite a remarkable effort from Province they were unable to breach the hosts defence and ultimately saw the game put to bed as Celia Seerane, popped up and secured the title.
