Despite road closures and very windy conditions, over 150 women’s and men’s participants braved the conditions to take part in Sunday’s News Cafe SPAR Ocean Racing Series at Hobie Beach in Port Elizabeth.


Velia Janse van Rensburg, who will next week try and defend her SPAR Redhouse River Mile title, showed that she is in top form, winning the Ladies 2km Ocean Swim by a margin greater than three minutes, ahead of second-placed Jessica Roux, with Sanmari Woithe finishing the podium call-out.

Newcomer to the Series Syanne Graham won the popular Series 1km Ocean Swim ladies race from Lauren Munton and Carmen Mould, and Treloar Childs won the won the 5km Ladies beach run race, ahead of Ursula Kuhn and Judi van Eeden.

Antoinette Scholtz won the 4km Ladies race from Tanya van Wyk and Janine Wood, while Kirstin Wessels won the ladies category in the 8km paddle distance, finishing 8th overall, a mere 9 minutes behind the men’s category winner.

The next local race in the popular SPAR Ocean Racing Series, which is open to all contenders, is being sponsored by the Kat Leisure group, and will take place on Sunday 24th February. For further information contact Zports on 041-585 4843 or see the Ocean Racing Series website.
