Hello gsport. I thought I’d
share some news of my trip to the Commonwealth Power lifting Championships from
6-9 December 2007 that took place in Christchurch,
New Zealand.
There were 15 participating countries with approximately 150 lifters taking
part of which approximately 50 were female.
I
did my best-ever in an International competition and generally the South African
team did extremely well – taking most of the important medals.
I garnered four gold medals in the Masters 1; 52 kg class. Gold for the squat
(125 kg), gold for bench (55 kg), gold for the dead lift (152.5 kg) and gold
overall (332.5 kg) at a bodyweight of 49.0 kg. The dead lift is also a new SA
Masters 1 (40-49 yrs) record (my own from the World Champs that I bettered) and
even better, a new SA Senior record (24-39 yrs), breaking a record that has
been standing since 1994.
Along with two other female lifters (Junko Kitamura, Louise Steenkamp) I also
took the first place trophy for the Best Overall Masters 1 Female Team. I also
won a silver medal for the Overall Best Masters 1 Female Lifter. Another South
African, Junko Kitamura, took the gold in the same category.
We all did extremely well as essentially we had no sleep over a period of three
days and two nights! We landed there, via Singapore, on the Wednesday afternoon
and had to lift the very next day! Not good – very tired and jet-lagged.
Generally I had a very good power lifting year and had won a total of 11 medals
for the year.
* Gold at the Western
Province Champs (Senior).
* Gold at the SA champs – Masters 1; 52 kg class and Best Masters 1 Female
Lifter trophy.
* Silver in the SA Senior champs; 52 kg class.
* Two silver and one bronze at the World Champs in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
* Four gold and one silver now at the Commonwealth Champs.
As I turn 50 yrs old this year I will now move up to the Masters 2 category, so
lots of SA records waiting to be broken! I am going to give it a good shot
while I still can.
