Spar Proteas international netballer Phumza Maweni was honoured with a mural at the Phumza Maweni and Sporting Chance junior netball tournament in Khayalitsha on Sunday, 14 August 2022, as part of City of Cape Town’s legacy projects ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup in the Mother City.
The Phumza Maweni Foundation teamed up with Sporting Chance Foundation supported by City of Cape Town and Spar to host the inaugural junior netball tournament for girls aged 15 and 19. The tournament featured 10 under- 15 teams and 10 under- 19 teams from netball clubs in Khayalitsha, as they battled it out for the converted trophies.
The challenge for the Phumza Maweni Foundation is to identify players that display exceptional talent and flair order to mentor and monitor their netball progress.
“Usually I used to come back to do some small clinics and coaching clinics, but now I decided to surprise them with something big, because we are actually hosting the 2023 Netball World Cup,” said Maweni.
In addition to supporting the tournament, City of Cape Town has partnered with the Cape Town Netball Federation to roll out an afterschool programme focused on developing player skills, rules of play and teamwork.
Maweni who had no idea of the 30×7 meter mural crafted by artist Rizah Potgieter said: “I don’t know how to explain this, it is something else. I am emotional, when I am thinking about it, but it is a special moment for me. I am thankful for it, I really appreciate it.”
She further added: “I was shocked, I worked with these people but they never mentioned something like this.”
The artwork is visible from the N2 highway just, after the Mew Way turnoff. This is the second artwork City of Cape Town has commissioned as part of the lead up to the 2023 Netball World Cup in the City.
In her statement posted on Facebook Maweni quoted the late Nelson Mandela saying: “Sport has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand.
“It is our vision as the Foundation to continue to inspire and change lives,” she concluded.
