Banyana Banyana captain Portia Modise has been recognised as the African Women’s Championship’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ in Nigeria, according to CAFOnline.com.
Banyana claimed the championship’s bronze medal on Friday, after beating arch-rivals Cameroon 5-4 on penalties, after a 2-all draw at the final whistle, and Modise was awarded a cash prize of N100,000.00 for her performance.
BBC Sport quotes national women’s coach Augustine Makalakalane: “It may not be a true reward for the girl’s hard work, but I believe they will bounce back to take their place in the next few years."
In the competition’s final on Saturday, tournament hosts Nigeria claimed the continent’ cup for a record fifth time, after beating Ghana 1-0 in to the acclaim of an estimated 30,000-strong crowd.
Their win means that Nigeria have won the championship title at each showing since it’s inception in 1998, and with this win, the Super Falcons have recorded their third Cup Final victory over the Black Queens, with this year’s home victory adding misery to Ghana’s earlier losses in 1998 and 2002.
As the most prolific scorer in this year’s event, Nigeria’s Perpetua Nkwocha’s golden boots earned her N100,000 and a silver trophy, and Nigeria also clinched the award as the tournament’s Best Behaved Team.
"That I have been crowned the highest goal-scorer is something very special to me,” CAFOnline quotes Nkwocha, “Because since the introduction of the Award, I am the only person to win it twice.
"This can only help motivate me to aspire to greater heights, but it would not have been possible without my colleagues and my Coach, Ntiero Effiom".
