The Supporter of the Year category at the Momentum gsport Awards celebrates individuals who consistently support and show up for women’s sport on a daily basis.
In 2022, Nakedi Thlathla walked away with the converted award, which was handed over by renowned football supporter Mama Joy Chauke who is a two-time winner in the category.
Thlathla, who runs a cakes and cupcakes business, is an avid supporter of women’s football in South Africa, as she tirelessly shows up for the women’s side of the game whether it is watching matches at stadiums or Tweeting about the beautiful game.
As part of our #PowerOfRecognition series, we reconnect with Thlathla to chat about her awards experience and how being honoured has motivated and empowered her to continue supporting women in sport passionately.
Nakedi, it is a pleasure chatting to you! In 2022, you were honoured with the Supporter of the Year accolade at the Momentum gsport Awards, please tell us why you think the Power of Recognition is important?
I think the power of recognition is important because it allows women in sports to be recognized and gives them a chance to showcase their talents in the many different sports that they participate in.
How do you handle the spotlight?
Well, the spotlight is good as long as you don’t lose focus. The aim is always to do better so get the praises and get back to doing the real work.
What was the best part of your Momentum gsport Awards experience?
Having to walk the Momentum gspot Award stage is still my highlight to this date, it felt unreal but amazing.
What is your advice to someone who is perhaps struggling to value themselves and recognize their own achievements?
I believe we should allow it to be celebrated. It is uplifting and can definitely elevate the performance of one’s hard work.
What are your thoughts on the Year of Women’s Sport and the spotlight on women’s sport in 2023?
As a supporter of sport in general, I feel very delighted that I’m able to root for my favourites, this is such a crucial year for women in sport.
What are your views on the impact of the work gsport does?
gsport is such a great initiative and I hope everyone gets involved in one way or the other. Women’s sport is deserving of attention and gsport is doing exactly that. Women have to fight for equality in almost all areas of their lives but gsport is there to close the gap.
What can we do to close the visibility gap in women’s sport? And what part are you playing?
Let’s get involved in women’s sport, create meaningful interactions and help our female athletes to build successful teams for women’s sport overall. I personally fan girl everyone!
What is your message to South African women’s teams who are currently playing in World Cups?
I’d like to wish them all the best, go out there and make a name for themselves and represent the flag.
What is your wish for women’s sport?
My wish for women’s sport is to see it thrive. May it get the attention it deserves and I also hope to see gender equality at all levels in sport.
