The Pro Beach Soccer League is set to host its first ever women’s competition when the tournament begins on the 14th of January 2023.
The competition was first launched in 2021 with the aim to create a women’s league alongside the men’s competition.
This news was confirmed by Pro Beach Soccer League President Gordon Masondo. He said that six teams will compete in the inaugural league before more teams are added in the next season.
In an interview on Scrolla.Africa, Masondo revealed: “We are bringing ladies to be part of beach soccer now. It is something we have been discussing for a very long time and we are glad it will be happening.”
He added: “The reason why we opted for six teams for now was to make sure the both leagues end at the same time. From next year, we hope to grow it bigger than it is. It is a good thing we are bringing ladies into the sport too. We are trying to let equality be something we live in sports.”
Masondo also said in the interview that they are hoping to stretch the competition to other parts of the country and not just host it in Durban.
He concluded: “There’s a high cost for the clubs traveling to Durban all the time so everyone deserves a chance to host. There are other plans in place but we haven’t finalised it.”
