Pro20 Super 4s Kicks Off

The country’s top women cricketers will once again descend on Kimberly for the Women’s Super 4 Competition starting on Saturday, with the main focus being Pro20 cricket. The second edition of the tournament has been formatted to coincide with the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in May and will give some of the prospects an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the touring party.

“We are preparing for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 World Cup in May and we expect keen competition from the players who want to force their way into the national team. All we want to do is select the best squad that will do South Africa proud in the West Indies,” said CSA Women’s Cricket Manager, Max Jordaan.

The Central team carry most of the in-form players in their squad with KwaZulu-Natal’s trio of Trisha Chetty, Chloe Tryonne and Rasika Maharaj performing well in the Women’s Provincial League. Wicket-keeper batsman, Chetty is high up in the batting orders in the Women’s Provincial League, with an average of 51.00 and two hundreds and a fifty to her name.

Tryonne has been one of the most impressive players to emerge over the past year, and could further cement her spot in the Senior Women’s team structures, with a convincing performance during the weekend. Tryonne was the vice-captain of the SA Under -19 XI that was selected at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Girls U19 week in East London in December and is the leading wicket-taker (20) in the Women’s Provincial League.

“Chloe has really impressed this season. She came away with a great performance at the U19 girls week in East London, has done well for KZN in the Women’s League. She will definitely be one of our strike bowlers this weekend and hopefully an inspired performance here (Kimberly), will lead to greater things for her future,” said the Central coach, Hermanus Laven.

Defending champion, Highveld, have a host of experienced National players in Cri-Zelda Brits, Charlize van der Westhuizen, Dane van Niekerk, Mignon du Preez and Kirsty Thomson. This tournament not only helps to groom future prospects, but also gives the National Women’s players the opportunity to get competitive match practice under their belts.

“We obviously still want to defend the trophy we walked away with in September but more importantly I’m hoping some of the experienced players will come out and lead in style. The ICC Women’s World Twenty20 is around the corner and most of the players will want to get some good knocks in ahead of the tournament,” said Highveld coach, Jacques du Preez.
