Leading professional cyclists Anriette Schoeman and Marissa van der Merwe have each successfully defended their respective provincial titles over the weekend, in the Eastern Province Champs Road Race and Mpumalanga’s Road Cycling Championships.
Anriette Schoeman started with the Elite men in the 114km EP Champs, even though it was clear that Schoeman was still very uncomfortable as a result of her injury, sustained earlier this year after being run over by a car while training for the Cape Argus.
Competing with her right wrist in a splint, Schoeman still managed to break away on the Butterfield circuit, and once gain followed her winning strategy to win in 3.28.12.
The new EP Champs in the Veteran Categories are:
Yolinda Erasmus (Vets 30-34yrs)
Sanmari Woithe (Vets 35-39yrs)
Alta Havenga (Vets 40-44yrs)
Proline team-mate Marissa van der Merwe won her race with the same strategy in the 104km Mpumalanga race, when she left the ladies behind to finish as top lady in the Mpumalanga Cycling Champs, also taking full honors in the 5km Hill Climb, and 20km Time Trail Champs.
Mpumalanga 104km Results:
1. Marissa can der Merwe
2. Wilmari du Plessis
3. Ane Badenhorst
