In the past three years Western Province
have won the championship twice, while Boland won last year’s competition. The
close rivalry between the teams continued this season, with Western Province
just shading Boland by 22 runs in a hard-fought encounter at the UCT Oval.
Both teams play away matches this weekend.
Northerns, who host Boland in Pretoria on
Sunday, are in third place on the log with 13 points, while Free
State, who are at home to Western Province
on Saturday, are seventh with nine points.
The final round of the competition takes place
on Saturday, February 7, with Western Province at home to Eastern
Province and Boland hosting KwaZulu-Natal.
"Although we are currently top of the log,
Western Province are breathing down our necks
and are a formidable force in women’s cricket. We are ready for a really tough
match against Northerns this weekend," said Boland coach Noor Rhode.
"Let’s hope that the weather does not
interfere with either match this weekend," commented Olivia Anderson, captain
of the Western Province team. "To win or lose the
championship because of a wash-out would simply not be cricket!"
