Somali professional boxer, Ramla Ali has been smashing barriers and breaking glass ceilings when it comes to her sporting profession as she recently won the first sanctioned female professional boxing bout held in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, 20 August 2022.
Ali knocked out Dominican Republic’s Crystal Garcia Nova after one minute and five seconds of the first round in Jeddah with a smacking right hand to the chin, sending the Dominican’s mouthguard flying out of the ring.
The history maker and trailblazer has achieved so much that seemed impossible but from 2015, her star started to shine as she won the 2015 Novice National Championships in England. A year later, she won the Boxing Elite National Championships and Great Britain Championships.
As if that wasn’t enough, in 2019, Ali walked away with the African Zone Featherweight title.
Last year, the 32-year-old competed in the women’s featherweight event at the 2020 Summer Olympics and though she lost, she became the first boxer to ever represent Somalia on the Olympic stage.
Ali continues to leave a footprint for women to follow up on as she also launched “The Sisters Club” which is a charitable initiative that provides spaces for Muslim women and minorities to learn and enjoy boxing in the United Kingdom.
