Mariska Venter showed no effects of the inclement weather as she cruised through her first round clash against compatriot Dipuo Molefe without losing a match, at the Airports Company South Africa Gauteng Open in Benoni on Wednesday, 3 April, 2013.

Zintle Platyi was forced to retire in the other first-round singles match against Nomo-Afrika Gxumisa after injuring her right hand, for a 7-5 4-2 retired injured result.

Meanwhile, world number seven Kg Montjane enjoyed a bye alongside the Women’s Singles division seeds, and will join the action at the Gauteng East Tennis Centre on Thursday.

Montjane warmed up for her title defence by spending three hours on the practice court, fine tuning a few aspects of her game. “You have to stay in it, keep your game sharp,” the SA number one said. “I would love to defend my title, but I never look too far ahead.

“I’m playing Siphokazi Fuma in my first match and it should be a good one. She is a tough competitor and the match will definitely help sharpen my game.”
