Contest Director Marcos Bukao called an early halt to Day Five proceedings at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships on Thursday, when the surf dropped to just one foot, and the weather changed from hot to cold at Praia Mata, Costa Da Caparica, Portugal.
By then it was too late for Chantelle Rautenbach, whose confidence-building 10.5 score still failed to stop Australia’s Laura Enever setting down a heat-topping 15,5, closely followed by the USA’s Sage Ericson, with a clear 15.0.
Chantelle will now contest the Peru’s Valeria Sole in the Repercharge Round 4 to stay in the competition.
Unfortunate qualifications for Nikita Robb and Tarryn Chudleigh means that they will contest the same Fourth Qualifying Round heat, against Americans Courtney Conloque and Sage Ericson.
Tarryn and Nikita have set South Africa’s best scores in the women’s U18 division for the tournament to date, with a high scores of 16.26 giving Nikita the highest total.
Chantelle may consider herself unlucky to find herself in the Repercharge Rounds fight-out, having set three 10-plus scores to record the most consistent performances.
