National coach Jenny King and the SPAR South Africa senior women’s hockey squad return from Argentina having finished in the final fourth place, after their 0-1 loss to the United States of America in the tournament’s third-place play-off on Sunday.
The South African national team was outclassed by both Germany and hosts Argentina in their respective games, conceding a total of 10 goals against the single goal scored against each of the game’s premier opposition, both currently ranked in the world’s top three sides.
South Africa faired better against the USA, who sit a single place above the Proteas in world rankings at No. 11, but the African squad will be disappointed to have finished last in light of the team’s hard-fought 4-all draw against their North-American rivals on Thursday.
It was regular scorer Tarryn Bright who once again spared the South African team blushes in their Saturday tie against Germany, who put six past the South African side in reply.
But in their closing fixture against the USA, South Africa could not penetrate a much tighter defence, and failed to score a goal for the first time in their 4 Nations Cup endeavours.
The 4 Nations Cup final between Argentina and Germany was a last-minute thriller, with both teams going into extra time level on a 1-all score, but the hosts snapped into action to claim a winning goal, a mere 30 seconds into extra time.
On their return from Argentina, the squad will face Canada in a home test series, before further away matches against opposition including Azerbaijan, England and Ireland.
