SA U19 to Bounce Back After Loss to India

South Africa U19 Women’s team will look to bounce back in their second group stage match after their 7-wicket loss to India at the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup held at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday, 24 January 2023.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first, posting 166/5 after 20 overs.

Fifteen-year-old Simoné Lourens was the star of the show for her team, using the home ground to her advantage, scoring 61* runs off 44 balls.

Elandri Janse van Rensburg also held her own but was eventually dismissed for 23 runs off 13 balls, while captain Oluhle Siyo went out for a duck after 4.4 overs.

Kayla Reyneke was dismissed for 11 after South Africa posted 89/3 after 12.3 overs, while Vice-Captain Madison Landsman put up a fighting performance of 32(17) to edge SA 142/5 after 17 overs.

Wicket keeper, Karabo Meso and Miane Smit finished the innings 19* and 16*, respectively.

In the reply, India’s Shafali Verma struck 45 from just 16 deliveries, including one over where all six balls went to the boundary, before being caught off Miane Smit.

But Verma’s fellow opener Shweta Sehrawat kept the momentum going, finishing unbeaten on a brilliant 92* from 57 as India chased down their target with 21 balls remaining.

The second group stage match will see SA U19 battle it out against Scotland on Monday, 16 January at 13:45 CAT at Willowmoore Park, Benoni.
