Photo: CSACricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday announced the appointment of former India women’s captain, Anjum Chopra to the management team of the South Africa women’s squad. Chopra, who represented India for 17 years and participated in six ICC Women’s World Cup tournaments, will play a technical advisory role in the squad.

Chopra’s areas of facilitation would include; mental training, computer assisted player and match analysis as well programme and visual training. She will report directly to, Hilton Moreeng who has taken over the reigns as head coach. Chopra will meet the team for the first time at a training camp held at the High Performance Centre in Hatfield over the weekend and will focus on the preparation for the five-match One Day International (ODI) Series in the West Indies in early January.

This tour would provide ample opportunity for the new coaching regime in preparation for the ICC Women Cricket World Cup in India a few weeks later. The appointment of Chopra will provide the added value of her experience and know-how of Indian conditions.

She made her debut at the age of 17 and was the first women’s player to appear in 100 ODIs. She led India to their first ever Test series win on foreign soil and is currently a cricket commentator, business coach, author and motivational speaker.

“The availability of Anjum Chopra to work within the space of South African women’s cricket should close the gap in the international experience between South Africa and the rest of the top women cricketing nations. The recent performances of the Proteas at the ICC Women T20 highlighted this shortcoming. We believe that the wealth of on-field cricket experience, leadership and business acumen elevates Anjum as the ideal person to lead our team into the semi-finals at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India,” said Max Jordaan, Manager of Women’s and Senior Cricket at CSA.
