The South African Football Association (SAFA) will complete the final phase of the KNVB coaching course in Limpopo (18th-22nd April), Mpumalanga (24th-28th April) and Free State (30 April – 04 May).

The KNVB coaching course is an initiative of the Dutch Football Federation and SAFA aimed at training numerous aspirant female coaches in South Africa.

Six Provinces have seen the full and successful implementation of the KNVB coaching course with over 132 women coaches trained since the programme took off in March 2012 with teachers being the main targets as football is often played in schools.

SAFA’s Acting Technical Director, Fran Hilton-Smith says she is excited that they are nearing the completion of the first phase of the KNVB course adding that the exercise has been highly successful. She commended the Dutch Football Association for empowering women through this initiative. The programme also looks at educating mothers to enable them to pass the knowledge to children.

“The KNVB courses have made a huge difference to the lives of many women by giving them a taste of what it is like being a football coach and many have gone further to do more courses within the SAFA structures,” said Hilton-Smith.

“We commend the Dutch for this wonderful initiative. One of the graduates from the programme, Simphiwe Dludlu is currently completing her UEFA B licence in Netherlands as we speak, sponsored by the KNVB”.

The KNVB will send an instructor to conduct the courses. Former Banyana Banyana captain, Desiree Ellis will assist in coordinating the courses, while Hilton-Smith will assess the coaches for further training.

Once these three courses have been completed, a higher level course will be held for interested graduates from the nine Provinces so that they can complete the SAFA C licence which is equivalent to the SAFA Introductory coaching course.
