Award-winning mountaineer and explorer, Saray Khumalo is well on her way to completing her explorer grand slam journey, recently summiting Mount Vinson.

Having climbed the Everest in 2019, Mount Elbrus in Russia and Aconcagua to mention a few, Khumalo continues to take the small steps that has brought her to this milestone.

With the support of Momentum and other corporates, the founder of Summits with a Purpose hopes to keep making history.

On her Instagram account, Khumalo was thankful to everyone who has been involved in her journey from the beginning.

Speaking to gsport, Khumalo says the 6th summit was bittersweet.

“The 6th summit was a little bit of a bitter sweet affair having abandoned the climb in 2019 due to injury during my South Pole last degree expedition before Covid changed our lives.

“Like all mountains, I have learnt never to underestimate the climb or the descent. Always being mindful of every moment and deliberate with every step”, she said.

Khumalo continued as she chats us through the experience of climbing Mount Vinson.

“Although Vinson is not as high as other mountains that I have climbed, it was cold and flirted with us for a few days with high winds that prevented anyone from moving further up the mountain.

“Its summit is hidden at the edge of the mountain range surrounded by the white dessert and after a few hours climb from higher camp it becomes clear that your feet are higher than any peak around you or on the continent and at that moment, you are above everything else that you have known to be home but the scary thing is that the peak can never be your home but a memory that you will hold onto and tap into beyond that summit moment to realise your limitless potential as a human being.”

As this mountain warrior continues to inspire the next generation to do the extraordinary, she hopes this opportunity will give courage to women to explore the world.

“Like all my climbs to date, I am always humbled by the opportunity and pray that this opens doors for more women like me to explore this world and beyond. To use their opportunities or privilege and make a meaningful impact to the world around us. To unapologetically break boundaries, dream BIG and step into their greatness irrespective of the challenges along the way. Although I didn’t shed a tear this time on the summit, I was filled with pride and confidence that there is hope for every African child who dares to dream!” concluded Khumalo.
