South Africa’s leading track and field athletes are set to begin their spirited campaign to secure places on the SA Team to the 2008 Beijing Olympics when the Yellow Pages Series gets underway in Secunda, Mpumalanga, on Friday.
Spectators can expect fireworks at the first meeting of the series, with participating athletes are determined to make an early impact in the Series.
A field of 30 runners the women’s version of the 3000m will see experienced campaigners being challenged by up and coming runners, and national 3000m steeplechase record holder Teboho Masehla has no illusion of what lies ahead.
"I aim to improve my national record substantially in order to qualify for the Beijing Olympics," says Masehla. "To achieve this I must have the basic speed which I will need to combine with my hurdling technique.
Among her more experience challengers will be Nolene Conrad and Violet Raseboya, and a spirited challenge from younger contenders will come from Patience Khumalo, Nandi Meyer, Praxedis Dim, Selina Mofokeng, Destiny Titus and Mpumalanga’s Noria Sibanda.
