The South African wheelchair tennis team Kgothatso Montjane and Mariska Venter won the women’s title at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Africa Qualification Event in Abuja, Nigeria.
The duo saw off Morocco 2-0 in the final, and after winning the continental qualifier, will represent Africa at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup event, in Turkey in May, 2024.
After defeating Kenya and Egypt 3-0 earlier in the tournament, Venter started the onslaught against Morocco, as she raced to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Samira Benichi, before two-time Grand Slam winner, Kgothatso Montjane ensured qualification by defeating Najwa Awane in a 6-3, 6-0 game.
Speaking to Nigeria Tennis Live after the qualification, Patrick Selepe, the South African coach, stated that his team was in the competition to qualify and they are happy to have won.
He noted, however, that “What we have to do now is to fight so that we can remain in the world group, so that other African teams can come to join us.”
