North West held their nerve in a tense shootout to be crowned 2026 SA Hockey U21 Inter-Provincial Tournament women’s champions, edging Western Province after a 1-1 draw in the final at the KC March Astro in Gelvandale, Gqeberha on Friday, 14 August 2026.
The championship decider capped five days of competition that brought together the country’s leading U21 women’s provincial sides and the invited SA U18 Girls from Monday, 10 August to Friday, 14 August.
Western Province struck first in the final through a 27th minute goal before Germarie Spershott equalised for North West in the 58th minute. With nothing to separate the sides after regulation time, the title went to a shootout that produced just one successful conversion as North West prevailed 1-0 to lift the national crown.
The result completed a striking turnaround. Western Province had edged North West 1-0 when the sides met in the pool phase, inflicting the eventual champions’ only defeat of the week. Three days later, North West responded when it mattered most, adding the 2026 title to the crown they won in 2024.

North West announced their intentions early in Gqeberha, opening their Pool B campaign with an 8-0 victory over Free State before overwhelming hosts Eastern Province 10-0. Thabelani Metu, Carolien Wessels and Emily Wilson were among the scorers in a dominant pool campaign. After their narrow defeat to Western Province, they returned to winning ways in the semi-finals, where Spershott converted a final-minute penalty corner to see off the unbeaten SA U18 Girls 1-0.
Western Province’s road to the final was equally compelling. Jodie Blows and Ruby Kraus were on target as they opened with an 8-0 win over Eastern Province, and they completed the pool stage with three wins from three without conceding a goal.
Their semi-final against Northerns Blues delivered the drama of the week. Kraus and Tara Pakendorf gave Province a 2-0 lead before Abigail Holderness struck twice from penalty corners to force a shootout, which Western Province won 4-3.
The SA U18 Girls provided one of the stories of the tournament. Competing above their age group, the national schools side topped Pool A with victories over Southern Gauteng, Northerns Blues and WP Peninsula, with Marlene du Plessis and Amogelang Motlatle among their scorers.
The U18 Girls’ unbeaten run ended in the semi-finals, but they responded in the best possible way, beating Northerns Blues 2-1 in the bronze medal match to secure third place at a national U21 championship.
Northerns Blues had opened the tournament brightly, with Ella Shuttleworth, Olivia Dillon and Emily Macquet all on target in a 3-0 win over WP Peninsula, and Macquet was on the scoresheet again in the bronze medal match as the Blues finished fourth.
In the classification matches, WP Peninsula claimed fifth place after a 2-2 draw with Eastern Province and a 3-2 shootout win, while Southern Gauteng finished seventh in style with an 8-0 victory over Free State in which captain Unathi Magudulela struck twice.
Kraus finished as the tournament’s top goal scorer, with her Western Province teammate Leah du Plessis named best player. North West goalkeeper Rebecca Haswell was named best goalkeeper.

The podium finish for the SA U18 Girls underlined the value of exposing the country’s leading schoolgirls to competition above their age level, with the tournament once again serving as a key step in identifying the players who will shape the next generation of South African women’s hockey.
