Shrijana Ghising becomes Nepal’s first-ever international Para Taekwondo champion at the season-ending Para Grand Prix Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Thursday, 22 December 2022.
Ghising beat the world’s top three fighters on the way to the unprecedented medal, including a 12-0 win over Turkey’s reigning world champion and No. 1-ranked Meryem Cavdar in the final.
Ghising’s medal marked the first time an athlete from Nepal had ever stood atop a podium at a major international sporting event.
On her way to the finals, she defeated second-ranked Jessica Quijano of Mexico 8-7 in the quarter-finals and third-ranked Brazilian Christian Nascimento 15-13 in the semi-finals.
The silver medallist at the Asian Para Youth Games, went seven places to seventh in the world Para Taekwondo rankings in her weight group.
She collected 100 points to finish on 112, giving her a passage to the Paris Para Olympics 2024.
