2021 Momentum gsport Award’s Woman in Radio winner, Cato Louw will be looking to defend her crown, as she is up against Thobela FM’s Conny Matjila and Ligwalagwala FM’s Xolile Mabuza at #gsport17.
The woman in radio award recognises a woman in sport, who is using her voice to promote women’s sport content on radio and demonstrates a convincing edge as a radio journalist.
This year, Louw is a double finalist as she also features in the SuperSport Woman in TV award category.
Following the announcement of her being a double finalist, Louw took to social media, saying: “What a Monday morning, so humbled to be alongside these women, thank you.”
She further added: “I really, really love my job and being nominated for gsport4girls is just the cherry on top!! Dankie.”
Louw is a sports anchor on EWN, a SuperSport rugby presenter and has also anchored tournaments such as Varsity Cup, SA Schools and the Currie Cup amongst others.
In 1999, Matjipa became the first woman to be employed as a sport commentator in a male dominated industry. Her passion for sport pushed her into wanting to make a living through commentary. She is now at Thobela FM as a sports presenter and commentator.
The phenomenal woman started the Conny Matjipa Foundation with the main purpose of developing future young generations and helping them get into professional football clubs and academies. Over the years, the foundation has given away a large number of football jerseys, particularly in her hometown of Namakgale in Limpopo, as a way of giving back to the community that raised her.
Rounding up the category, the multitalented Mabuza is a word artist, designer and cricket analyst for Ligwalagwala FM.
The 24-year-old who hails from Msogwaba village in Mbombela, grew up struggling with bullying and depression, but found solace in cricket as it brought light into her life. That love grew into wanting to become the first black female to commentate in SiSwati.
Prior to receiving the news of being a finalist for the Momentum gsports Awards, Mabuza received a birthday message which she says: “I received a message that said I wish you live long to know why you were born.”
A week later, Mabuza says she received a call letting her know that she is a finalist for the Woman in Radio category at #gsport17.
“I was out of words and my heart was filled with gratitude. It feels good and it’s humbling to be seen, I guess I’m living and learning why I was born already.”
Taking to social media, Mabuza acknowledged those closest to her.
“All thanks to Thembelihle Dlala and producer Ali Milazi for affording me a platform to carry the sport of cricket with my voice in my mother tongue, Siswati. A big thank you to my uncle Gakwi Mashego who puts in the work in bringing my dreams to light (more than I do), you know how we got here malume.”
