South Africa’s Paula Reto captured the first title of her LPGA career, holding off American Nelly Korda down the stretch to win the Canadian Women’s Open by one stroke.
The 32-year-old from Cape Town made five birdies on the front nine on her way to firing a four-under-par 67 and finishing on 19-under 265 for 72 holes at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.
Reto ended her drought in her 157th start in an LPGA career spanning 9 years.
Speaking after her triumph Reto said, “Dream come true for sure. I’m really happy and it has been such a long time. I was like, ‘I hope one day I will win,’ and it came true. I’m really so excited.”
Third-ranked Korda, who would have taken the number one spot with a victory, also shot 67 to share second with South Korea’s Choi Hye-jin on 266.
Golf Canada said that more than 75,000 fans attended Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club over the week, an all-time record for the women’s championship and an impressive rebound after it had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021. Those ticket sales are a 55-per-cent increase over 2017 when the tournament was last at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, which was the previous benchmark for the event.
“From fans, from commercials, from amateurs, from our field, it has just been a dream scenario being here for the 2022 CP Women’s Open,” said Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum.
