Goal-scoring powerhouse Southern Gauteng properly came of age at the Randburg Astro on Saturday, when they swept aside 2011 champions Western Province 3-0 after leading 2-0 at half-time, to claim top honours in 2012 SA Hockey Inter-Provincial tournament in Johannesburg.
Turning out in their 21st consecutive appearance in the national tournament’s final, Kaspersky Southern Gauteng wasted no time in piling pressure on the visiting defending champs Province when captain Pietie Coetzee found Tsoanelo Pholo in space in the circle.
Forward of the Tournament Pholo feigned to the left and spun around to send keeper Hanli Hattingh the wrong way and tuck away the opening goal of the final, in the fourth minute of the match.
Back in the hunt minutes later, Pholo delivered the ball to Roxy Turner for a shot at goal, and when the ball deflected off Hattingh’s pads to fall favourably for Genevieve Frank, she made no mistake with an open goal in front of her for the hosts to double their lead in the 7th minute.
Southerns dominant possession in the opening half meant that Western Province spent most of their time in defence, and when Candice Manuel broke for a across the Southerns goal, SA’s reserve keeper Sanani Mangisa made short shrift of the interception to keep her sheet clean.
When WP’s Louise Coertzen opted for the aerial route to get the ball to her forwards, Robyn Johnson couldn’t get on the end of it to take the attack forward, and the rest of the half was spent mainly in the mid-field, with ample ball for Southerns to keep the pressure up.
Goal machine Pietie Coetzee was unlucky to be kept out by a brilliant save by Hattingh in the dying minutes of the first half from a PC, but she made good when she dragged a ball into the back of the net from a Penalty Corner in the 56th minute, to bring to finality the sparse opportunities the defending champs failed to put away when the opportunities presented themselves.
Northerns won bronze earlier in the day, beating an inspired SA U21 side 2-1 (1-0) to claim bronze.
