Soweto Pioneers women’s cricket coach, Tholang Hlalele, has called on the media to attend more local club and provincial games in order to amplify women’s sport coverage.
Coach Hlalele was speaking to gsport a few days after watching his side beat Black Widow Spiders to win the 2021 Wanderers T10 tournament at Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.
It was third time lucky for the side, packed with Imperial Lions women’s players, including Palesa Mapoo, Kgomotso Rapoo, who captained the team, and Raisibe Ntozakhe, after falling short in the past two tournaments.
“Happy for the win as we have been fighting to reach the finals past two tournament so this one was about time to make a name for the team.”
Mapoo was equally delighted to be part of a winning Soweto Pioneers outfit: “It felt awesome we played like champions from the first game to the end. T10 is a very fun and challenging tournament like playing 10 overs and having to score in those overs. It was hectic but the girls had fun and the outcome was unbelievable.
Next up for Soweto Pioneers is the Black Widow T20 tournament which starts on Sunday, 3 October. Mapoo says: “The girls are ready and in it to win it.”
