On Sunday, 20 May 2018 parkrun Paddy will rally in support of the SPCA at the 4th annual FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN.
An 11 year old Jack Russel Terrier from Table View, Paddy was treated like a celebrity at his first FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN in 2016.
According to Paddy’s Guardian, Mary Langebrink, she and her friends are passionate animal supporters. “In 2016 a group of us painted our faces with whiskers (like cats and dogs) and wore SPCA arm warmers and pinned posters to our backs to raise awareness for SPCA’s anti dog fighting campaign. Because we were running for SPCA, we thought that it would be fun to let Paddy wear a SPCA bandana in support of the cause. During this run Paddy was treated like a celebrity, and was stopped on numerous occasions so that people could take photos of him or selfies with him.”
“He participated in this race again in 2017 and was once again a hit,” continues Langebrink. “It was whilst participating last year that my friend Trudy Clayden (now Paddy’s Social Media Officer) and I hatched a plan that in 2018 we would create social media accounts for Paddy to raise funds for SPCA. We decided to take advantage of Paddy’s ‘celebrity status’ and let it help a good cause! The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is one of those ‘not to be missed’ races. It is by far the most fun race on the Cape Town athletics calendar.”
“It means a lot to our organisation that Mary and Paddy have decided to make their race count for more, by creating awareness and raising funds for the many animals in our care,” says Natasha Johannes, Cape of Good Hope SPCA Fundraising Officer. “The Cape of Good Hope SPCA will celebrate its 146th birthday on the same day as the race. This makes Paddy and Mary’s campaign extra special. Their goal is to raise R5000. This will assist us in caring for over 100 abandoned, rescued, impounded, stray and/or seized cats and dogs. These funds will enable us to administer the necessary treatment to ensure that these animals are parasite free, healthy and happy.”
Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and the oldest animal welfare institution in the country.
Charity Support: When entering online, runners can choose to support either or both the FNB Cape Town ONERUN Charities: The Cape Of Good Hope SPCA and Die Burger Kersfonds.
