Both Tammy-Lee Smith and Rosanne Hodges, South Africa’s two women surfers participating in the International Surfing Association’s World Surfing Games, have emerged unscathed from their first two rounds, and will surf in their respective heats in the third round next up.
Smith narrowly placed second behind Italy’s Ornella Pellizari in her first heat, but comfortably beat Mexican Sofia Melgosa into third. In round two, Smith was again easily ahead of Robyn Davies (UK) and Sofia Borquez (Chili), but lagged behind heat winner Diana de Souza of Brazil.
On tournament form, Smith should beat Patricia Ross (Tahiti) in round three, but will face stiff competition in Bethany Hamilton and French surfer Marie Pierre Abgraal, both of whom have eased into early teen scores in their earlier heats.
Rosanne Hodges has surfed particularly well, recording a third-best score of 14.33 in the first round for all heats, and backed that up with a solid 11.26 in her second round, placing first in her heat ahead of Julia Christian (USA), Caroline Sarran (France) and Portugal’s Patricia Lopes.
Again on form, Hodges should trump her third round opposition Lani Hunter (Hawaii), Laura Pegorano (Argentina), with sternest competition expected from Spaniard Mirka Martin.
