A weary South African U20 women’s rugby team will return home after their gruelling week in Santa Barbara, USA, with their final performance in the Nations Cup tournament ended a 32-5 loss to Canada, on Saturday, 23 July, 2011.

For a moment it looked like the form books had it all wrong when the SA U20 fullback wriggled through the 2011 Nations Cup form side defence to sprint the remaining 70 metres and score in the opening minutes of the final round-robin match, but the ray of hope was soon dashed as the superior European side went on to maul the Africans 66-7, in Santa Barbara on Thursday, 20 July.

Canada opened first-half scoring with a try at the posts but failed to convert, and kicking left them down again when a penalty-kick was missed, but these gifts weren’t enough to salvage redemption as Canada went on to beat South Africa 27-7 in their second U20 Nations Cup match in Santa Barbara, on Sunday evening.
