Tandi Cunningham won a memorable Matchplay trophy (
Click here to download the Matchplay results 12.58 Kb) at the 2008 40th Transnet Port Terminals Border Ladies’ Open Amateur Championship in East London on Tuesday, when she eliminated the tournament’s Strokeplay champ Nicole Bekker before going on to beat Henriette Frylinch with two holes to spare.
The match between Cunningham and Frylinck started with 2 birdies on the first hole, which set the tone for the game to follow, Cunningham moving to 4 up at the 7th after an eagle. After 9 holes the match stood at 3 up to Cunningham. Frylinck pulled back to only 1 down after 12 holes, but Cunningham responded by winning the 13th, and then had a birdie at the short 14th to go 3 up. A regulation 4 on the stroke 2, 16th into the easterly clinched the match 4/3.
Earlier, Henriette Frylinck beat Angela Trollip (Border) on the 18th and then beat Millie Zim (Border) on the 19th, after Zim having found herself 4 down with 4 to go. The Border players really gave the visitors a run for their money. In the first game on Monday, Louise van Niekerk (Border) found herself only 1 down to Nicole Becker after 12 holes.
"The tournament was a great success," said Border Ladies Golf President, Muffy Parsons. "As you know we had a wonderful entry from the other provinces, which really added prestige to our tournament. Some of the top players from eight provinces participated. The standard of competition was very high, with 12 players with handicaps 3-and-under, which included three players playing off scratch.
"It is the first year we have had so many visitors. They all seemed to enjoy the tournament and have said that they would like to be back next year. Ever since the Border Championship has been one where players can earn merit points it has become more popular. I can only see the entry improving every year."
The semi-finals had found Nicole Bekker, winner of the Strokeplay ( Click here to download the Strokeplay results 25.70 Kb), coming up against Tandi Cunningham, and Tercia Matthysen faced Henriette Frylinck. The girls teed off in much better weather on Tuesday, but once again the games were very close. After 9 holes Cunningham was 1 up on Becker, but managed to beat her 3/2 at the close, while Frylinch beat Matthysen 4/3 in the other semi final game, after being 3 up at the halfway mark.
The B Division quarter-finals saw only one match that went down to the wire, with Renee Wales (WBGC) losing to Audrey Jarvis (Gonubie) on the last hole. The first semi-final saw Debbie Lacey beating Audrey Jarvis 5/4, while Janine van der Merwe put up a tough match against Kim Daniels, who only managed to beat Van der Merwe 2/1 on the 17th.
Debbie Lacey from WBGC played Kim Daniels from Eastern Cape. After 8 holes Daniels was 2 up. Lacey then won 6 holes in a row to be dormie playing the 16th which she lost. Daniels then stuck her tee shot at the short 17th, 2 metres from the hole. Lacey had to sink a 2-and-a-half metre pressure putt for a three, to halve the hole and win the match 2/1.
In the C Division Sheilagh Toich beat Sharon Hatting (both from ELGC) 5/4 in the first semi to advance to the final, while Issy Cocks (ELGC) fell 4/2 to Gonubie’s Michaela Fletcher, who went through to a final match that also went down to the wire. Toich was 3 down playing the 11th against the 12-year old Fletcher, who took the match to the 18th for Fletcher to win 1 up.
The Border Ladies Golf Championship is sponsored to the tune of R10,000 for a third consecutive year by the Transnet Port Terminals (formerly the South African Port Operations).
