At MSSA’s 20th North West Championships held on 5 & 6 March 2016, at St Conrad’s College, the game title Mortal Kombat X was played for the first time at an official South African eSports Championships.
Mortal Kombat X is a fighting game in which two players fight against each other using a variety of attacks, including special character-specific moves, Brutalities, and gruesome Fatalities. The energy meter, first introduced in the previous Mortal Kombat game, allows players to perform unique techniques. Players are able to interact with the environment, bouncing off areas to reposition themselves or using parts of the environment as weapons. In addition, each fighter has three different variations, each featuring a different set of moves they can use during the fight.
During the championships, Tania Brown displayed her skill and expertise in the game to finish first in the women’s section, and to qualify for the much coveted National Team Trials.
