Former SA Surfing Champion Tasha Mentasti revealed via her LinkedIn page, her new role as the Regional Director – Africa at World Surf League, on 29 April 2023.
Mentasti wrote: “I’m happy to share that I’ve started a new position as Regional Director – Africa at World Surf League!
“This opportunity allows me to help make positive change to help grow the sport of professional surfing on the African continent.
“I look forward to partnering and working together with like-minded brands and individuals who align with the same vision.
“The future of surfing is in Africa!”
This announcement comes a year after she was appointed as Head Coach of the 2022 SA Junior Surf side.
Speaking to gsport writer Oarabile Diphoko, the former champion elaborated on how the Regional Director position came about.
“This is a new position at WSL Africa, and it was created with the intention to be able to promote more growth and encourage development within the region for professional surfing.”
She further added how she would use her position to continue to grow the sport.
“This role allows me to make some long overdue changes on the ground, develop new strategies which will be more inclusive for the growth of the sport, in under-served and under-developed African surfing nation. It will also help implement new pathways, to be able to help advance the technical aspect of the sport, to include more diversity at professional surfing events around the continent.”
Lastly, she further shared what she looks forward to the most on her new adventure.
“The future of surfing is in Africa – I look forward to working alongside all surfing NFs around Africa to help develop the sport and give our talented athletes an opportunity to be able to showcase their surfing skills, on a global stage.”
