Thandi and Gina Triumph in PE

Two Highveld golfers were the standout players during last week’s Nedbank Eastern Cape Women’s Amateur Golf Championships at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club, with Pretoria Country Club’s Gina Switala winning the Matchplay event, and Wanderers Golf Club‘s Tandi von Ruben securing the Strokeplay trophy.

Von Ruben, a faithful participant in this event for a number of years, rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole for victory in the Strokeplay event (pdf click here to download the final leaderboard 69.93 Kb) to reward her persistence, to edge out Kloof‘s Pam Hayward and Switala, after the trio finished tied on an aggregate total of level-par 148, after 36 holes.

After a three-over 77 in the morning, the 21-year-old fired the best round of the afternoon with a superb three-under 71 in a howling westerly, sinking six birdies including a run of four downwind from the sixth to the ninth.

Von Ruben then eagled the 10th, and her other two gaining shots were sunk at the 13th and 18th flags, for the best round of the afternoon by a stretch. Afterwards Von Ruben said she drew on her previous experience of wind in Port Elizabeth, recalling the 67 she shot in the 72-Hole Teams event at Humewood in 2006.

Kloof‘s Hayward carded the best round of the day when the conditions were pretty quiet in the morning, six birdies and one drop secured her a spectacular five-under par 69. But she was 10 shots worse in the afternoon as she, like most of the field, succumbed to the strong wind, while Switala had rounds of 70 and 78.

Port Elizabeth Golf Club‘s Tanya Tibshraeny was the best of the local golfers, putting together cards of 76 and 78 for an aggregate total of six-over par 154.

The tournament then moved into Matchplay format (pdf click here to download the competition draw card 72.58 Kb) with the round of 16 being played. Von Ruben, Dominique Jacobs, Henrietta Frylinck, and Switala won their respective matches to advance to the semi-finals. In the end, Switala got her own back, when she beat Von Ruben on the 19th hole.
