Thembi Kgatlana put her football prowess on show as she helped her Mexican professional women’s football club Liga MX Feminil side Tigres UNAL to the Super Cup title at the Estadio Universitario, on Tuesday, 4 July 2024.

Kgatlana scored as the team sealed a 3-2 win over Rayadas de Monterrey.

Kgatlana scored in the 50th minute as she got past two of Rayadas defenders to equalise for her team, getting them back into contention as the score was 1-1, much to the delight of the home fans who filled ‘The Volcano’.

However, the drama wasn’t over yet, as Tigres then doubled their lead via Stephany Mayor in the 69th minute only to have Rayadas equalise via none other than Jermaine Seoposenwe in the 77th. Nayeli Rangel had the final say and sealed the Cup win for Tigres with her winner close to the end of regulation time.

This is a big win for Kgatlana as it marks the first Cup win in Mexico. The Banyana forward made headlines when she joined the Mexican team in December last year.

Her move from the National Women’s League side, Racing Louisville was, according to a report by US online site the second-highest fee in NSWL history at the time.

The Mexican league is split into two, with the first part of the calendar running from July to December, and the second part taking place from January to May. After each section, a winner is crowned.

Both South African players tasted success earlier this season as Kgatlana’s Tigres team won the Apuesta (first) while Seoponsenwe’s clubs won the Clausura (closing) league titles.
