One of the country’s most promising athletes, Thipe is unable to participate in the Potchefstroom Yellow Pages on Friday, which she had hoped to use to get her preparations out of the starting blocks.

The Sowetan reports that Thipe’s coach and husband, Eugene Thipe, said that the sprinter is due for a medical examination. “We are addressing the problem right now, but she has not trained in the last two weeks. We will see how the tests pan out and then take it from there.”

Athletics South Africa rules provide that an athlete must participate in a minimum of three Yellow Pages races to be considered for the Olympic team. Should Thipe not be passed fit for Friday’s event, she still has a further four Yellow Pages races to demonstrate her worth in.
