The organisers and of the participants of the 2006 Pick ‘n Pay Women’s Golf Inter Provincial Championship have witnessed a thrilling end to the tournament, which ended at Germiston Golf Club on Friday.

They came from all over the country to battle it out for the title, and the competition was fierce.

Gauteng Lions won for the fourth year in a row, and were obvious favourites from the start with the likes of Kim Brooks, Ashleigh Simon and Stacey Bregman in their team, but other young guns proved they were up for the challenge.

One of them was Bertine Strauss from the North West. The 14-year-old surprised the field when she beat Western Province’s Kelli Shean on the opening day.

Gauteng North B’s pint-sized 11-year-old Larissa Ras showed the rest of the field how much age counts when she claimed the qualifying round’s Individual Stroke Play title with a round of 72.

Secretary of Women’s Golf South Africa, Vivian Horak was thrilled with the standard of golf at this year’s IPT.

“It improves every year and they’re getting younger and younger. Just look at girls like Bertine Strauss.

“This year was hard-fought, with every Division going down the wire,” Horak told gsport.

Pick ‘n Pay has been a proud sponsor of the event for the past nine years and are gearing up for a super 10th year of sponsorship next year.

“Pick ‘n Pay have been great. Their support has been invaluable and we are really looking forward to next year’s event.”
