UP-Tuks Claim Inaugural Varsity 7s Title

UP-Tuks lived up to their pre-tournament favourite billing by beating UFH 46-0 to comfortably win the Varsity Women’s 7s title on Saturday, 5 October 2019 at Pirates Rugby Club.

The ladies from Pretoria scored the first try as Kirsten Eastes crossed the line before UFH had caught their breath. Naledi Msini then scored a wonderful individual try for the Stripe Generation to extend their lead to 12-0. In truth, the final was pretty much decided in the first half when Kemisestso Baloyi scored back-to-back tries for UP-Tuks to go into half-time with a 24-0 lead.

The second half saw the UP-Tuks demolition continue as they scored again and showed no remorse for UFH. UP-Tuks seemed to be aiming for a half a century of points as the onslaught continued. Baloyi bagged her second try of the game courtesy of Powerplay and that was the finishing touch of the 46-0 win as UP-Tuks were crowned the inaugural Varsity Women’s 7s champions.

UP-Tuks and UFH Dress Rehersal Far Closer Than Final

Earlier in the day, the finalists met in the round-robin phase, but it gave no indication to how one-sided the final would end up being.

UP-Tuks ran in three unanswered tries to lead 19-0 at half-time in the heat at Pirates Rugby Club. UFH were a different side in the second half and really gave it a fight as they scored a lovely team try to make it 19-7. However, UP-Tuks scores from during a Powerplay and their lead was 29-7 which saw them comfortably advance to the final.

UJ Beat UKZN, But Both Missed Out on the Final

The Orange Army, wearing an unusual white kit, took on UKZN in their final group match with no final hopes but it didn’t show.

UJ activated their Powerplay as soon as the game started and scored a 10-pointer and scored another quick fire try later to lead 17-0 in just under two minutes. UJ were bringing that fire as Voice Ndou scored a brace of tries on the cusp of half-time as UJ went into the break with a 31-0 lead.

UJ were ruthless and scored a fourth try early in the second half. All that seemed left for them to do was bring up the 50-mark, which looked on when they jotted down for their second Powerplay try. Ultimately, the locals had to settle for a 48-0 win to complete their Varsity Women’s 7s campaign.
