Sandra Winter wrote her name in the record books when she achieved the first three-peat in the prestigious SA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at George Golf Club on Wednesday.
The Kingswood golfer finished eight strokes clear of fellow Southern Cape golfer Sonja Bland on eight-over-par 224 thanks to a closing three over 75.
Few could question the serene way in which Winter went about her business as she built an almost unassailable lead with a first round 74 and 75 on day two.
It was not all plain sailing for Winter as she dropped five shots in the final round, including back-to-back bogeys at 17 and 18, but birdies at four and 16 helped her stretch her five shot overnight lead.
“Ever since I won the SA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship back-to-back in 2011 and 2012, I’ve always wanted to get the hat-trick and I’m absolutely delighted that I’ve done it,” Winter said.
“I played a lot of golf in preparation for the SA Women’s Inter-Provincial earlier this month and I thought I might have a good chance to capture my third title. Winning here at home makes this victory all the more special.”
Former champion Bland and two-time defending champion led the chase.
Bland from Fancourt rocked home birdies at 13 and 16 to take sole second with a 76 and Smith sealed third with a 77.
Gauteng North’s Lenza de Jager captured the B-Division title with a staggering 20 stroke victory.
The Pretoria Country Club player carried an insurmountable 17 shot lead into the final round and put an exclaimation mark on her winning performance with a final round 87.
Knysna’s Sunette Venter closed with an 88 to edge out Wilmarie Greyling from Vredendal Golf Club by one shot to take second.
Tersia Swanepoel held off Gauteng North’s Dot van Ryneveld to win the C-Division.
Swanepoel from North West carded rounds of 31, 36 and 35 to triumph on 102, four strokes clear of Van Ryneveld and six shots ahead of Maydie Otto.
