’16 Days’ Walk through Joburg

Patrick McDowall’s article for the Sunday Times online, entitled ‘SOS for Women and Children’, not only draws attention to the despicable record of gender violence against women and children, but also leads to information on how to become a part of the solution.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence and Child Abuse campaign will kick off with a 3km walk through Joburg tomorrow.

Those wishing to take part in the "Sisters with Blisters" walk are encouraged to come out in force in their stilettos, or shoes with a minimum heel height of 5cm.

The campaign is not without controversy, with some women’s rights advocates believing that an effort that endures for a short 16 days is ineffectual, and that statistics indicate that the level of abuse is on the increase.

The march, organised by the City of Johannesburg in association with Gender Links, Gender and Media Southern Africa, POWA and the Foundation for Human Rights, will start at Constitutional Hill in Hillbrow on Saturday evening at 5:30pm, and women will carry candles ‘to reclaim the right of women to be safe in all places’.
