5 Mins with SPAR’s Wendy Kruger

For many years
now, supermarket giant, SPAR, have been the biggest corporate supporter of
women’s sport, with major investments in hockey, netball, and road running.

Last month,
SPAR announced that it was renewing its sponsorship of netball for another
three years.

sponsorship, worth over R12 million, covers the annual inter-provincial championships
and the national team, and a national development programme. Part of the
sponsorship will also provide for a three or four nations tournament to be
played in South Africa.

Africa; what is the main reason behind SPAR
backing women in sport?

SPAR saw a
real need to assist where we could in an area that has been traditionally
overlooked by sponsors and with women being the major decision makers when
shopping it seemed an ideal fit.

How long has SPAR been supporting
women’s sport?

The Durban
Leg of the SPAR Women’s 10Km Challenge was the first event which began almost
20 years ago. 

Describe SPAR’s current involvement
with women’s sport?

currently the official sponsor of the South African Women’s Netball and hockey
teams.  We’re also the title sponsor of
both the national netball championships and the Women’s IPT hockey. We also
sponsor a series of road races in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban, PE and Cape Town
with over where over 45,000 women participate.

What is SPAR’s hope for women’s
sport in South Africa?

How do you keep fit?

I try to go
to gym as often as possible.

What is
your favourite sport?

I like all
sports but I am an avid Sharks supporter.

Who is your
favourite sports star?

quite hard because there are a few but I still think Steffi Graff was awesome
in her day and set a very good example for future players.
