94.7 Route Changes Necessary

Due to extensive roadworks taking place on Boundary Road in Honeydew, and to ensure the safety of participating cyclists, organisers of the Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge have been forced to implement a  Route Detour 2.81 Mb at late notice.

Instead of cycling down Northumberland Avenue past Northgate Shopping Centre, cyclists will now turn off Northumberland Avenue at Aureole Road, before joining Boundary Road further along.

This means the halfway point of the race is now where Aureole Road crosses Northumberland Avenue. The new route introduces a good downhill and a new uphill, also at Aureole Road.

Instead of finishing inside Waterfall Equestrian Estate, cyclists will now cross the finish line on Maxwell Drive, outside the Estate, from where they will be directed into the Estate to the hospitality area.

"The face of Johannesburg is changing rapidly, with many new housing developments going up, like the Cosmo City and Jackal Creek developments along that part of the Cycle Challenge route," said Tanya Harford, Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge race organiser.

"So, to this end, we’ve had to modify the route slightly to accommodate the developments currently taking place along Boundary Road, and to ensure the safety of the cyclists," continued Harford.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but really only have everybody’s best interests in mind. As usual, we thank the cycling fraternity and the residents of Joburg for their continued support and understanding."

Despite the changes, the race remains 94.7km long, and will continue to enjoy full road closure on the day. The list of road closures, a detailed Cycle Challenge route map and the fully-interactive route finder is available on the 94.7 Highveld Stereo website.

The Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge is now in its eleventh successful year. Permission has been granted by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department for the event, which has also been sanctioned by Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Amos Masondo.
